Financial assistance to India is set to completely halt by 2015. Many have claimed India does not need the cash as it has its own space programme and spends a reported £70 billion a year tackling poverty.

The £280m from the UK is also a tiny amount relative to the country’s spending.

HMS Bounty replica used in Brando film sinks, with two crew members missing

A replica of HMS Bounty that has featured in several films and TV shows has sunk off the coast of North Carolina after it was stranded in the path of Hurricane Sandy.

The 180 foot (55m) vessel was taking on water and had lost power 90 miles southeast of Hatteras, North Carolina. It was stuck in 40 mile-per-hour winds and 18-foot seas.
The ship was roughly 160 miles from the centre of Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane bearing down on the U.S. East Coast.

The European Union won the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to promote peace and democracy in Europe – despite being in the midst of its biggest crisis since the bloc was created in the 1950s.

The Norwegian prize committee said the EU received the award for six decades of contributions “to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.

Closing ceremony ends amazing summer of sport

Britain’s spectacular summer of sport ended on Sunday 9th September 2012 with the Paralympic Games closing ceremony led by British band Coldplay as the Olympic Stadium once again hosted a memorable party for athletes and fans alike. 

Paralympians rose and joined in with the Mexican waves inside the vast arena in east London even before the extravaganza was underway to signal the end of the 11-day festival of sport.

China finished top of the medal table, bagging 95 golds in their 231-medal haul with Russia (36 golds, 102 overall) and hosts Britain (34 golds, 120 overall) in second and third respectively.
"We’ve shared some wonderful days haven’t we?" London Olympics chairman Sebastian Coe said to the packed stadium who gave a roar of approval.

Great Britain’s Lizzie Armitstead recieves her silver medal on day two of the Olympic Games in London.

Team GB cyclist Lizzie Armitstead has battled through torrential rain to a spectacular second place on The Mall as Great Britain picked up its first medal of the Games.

The 23-year-old from Otley near Leeds banished the disappointment of the men’s road race as crowds billowing "Lizzie, Lizzie" swept her to silver.
