35TH ANNIVERSARY AND CHRISTMAS 2014 DINNER-DANCE CELEBRATIONS

XMAS 2014

VIEW OF WEMBLEY STADIUM FROM METROPOLIS LOUNGE AND COCKTAIL BAR

The 35th Anniversary of the founding of SKA LONDON and the Christmas Dinner & Dance was celebrated as planned on 7 December 2014 in great pomp and style at the Metropolis Lounge and Cocktail Bar in Wembley.  The lavishly laid banqueting hall was packed to the brim and regrettably a few applications for tickets had to be turned down for lack of space.  Music supplied by Chico (Francis) swayed the crowd from nostalgic to contemporary moods with the soft drinks (on the house) overflowing.

The guests were warmly received at the security gate of the Metropolis by Loy D’Souza, Secretary.  Loy also received the evening’s Guest of Honour Mr Virendra Sharma MP for Ealing & Southall.  After a formal introduction by the MCs Dr Rupal Menezes and Tressy Pinto, Mr Sharma was introduced to each table by the President.  The audience were highly delighted  with the affable nature of Mr Sharma whose placid nature soon won him the admiration of the entire audience.  The President Ron Rrodrigues in his opening speech warmly welcomed Mr Sharma for attending and gracing the event .  Mr Sharma in his short address said that he was expecting a large number of elderly people in a group founded 35 years ago but was pleasantly surprised to see a much younger generation dominating the show. He urged everyone not to lose their identity and their values as he fondly reminisced his own Punjabi origin.

Games for children were followed by games for adults and were hotly contested by almost everyone for the unknown prizes including a ticket for two at the Palms of Goa.  There was plenty of Christmas tunes which kept the Christmas spirit going not just from the fully stocked bar but in also in peoples’ hearts.

The first course: the starters got served on ‘eat as much as you want’ basis. Then followed a sequence of dances to the exhilarating music from the podium until the dinner which was a welcome break from the dancing, games and singing.

A new form of entertainment was introduced in the form of a short Konkani Play called "Confessional Secrets". The play centres round a Parish Priest, his butler and the penitent parishioner. The Parish Priest hears the penitent’s confession but unaccustomed as he was to hear the local variation of the seventh commandment, gets curious and determines to find out the whole truth and advises the penitent to confess all to St Anthony’s statue located in the church. In the meantime the Parish Priest instructs his butler (played by Pius Menezes) to disguise as the statue of St. Anthony. You can imagine the butler’s shock (now disguised as St Anthon) when he heard that the penitent had broken the seventh commndment with the woman who (unbeknown to the penitent) happened to be the wife of the butler.

Raffle draw took place soon after dinner and there were great many prizes and most had a Christmas theme. The dancing that followed lasted until the end of the show.  The finale arrived when the President was lifted in his chair by some ardent well wishers in appreciation of the hard work put in by him in organising a very successful 35th Anniversary and Christmas event.

The President and the Managing Committee wish every member and well wisher a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Peaceful New Year.

We have captured many pictures to preserve the memories for a long time to come and hope you will enjoy watching them on line.  Please send your feedback using the form which is displayed at the end of the pictures.

Dear Loy

That was an amazing party, well organised. Thank you for a brilliant party. The venue was very pleasant and the entertainment for the kids was excellent. Our grandchildren did not want to go home! My previous experience of traffic in that area is not a good one, but there was no traffic either. All in all we all had an enjoyable day. Sorry I did not get to talk to you and thank you personally. Best wishes for Christmas and the New Year

One of the most well organised anniversary event. The organisers deserve a big thank you and the leader Ron Rodrigues can now sit back and and enjoy the fruits of his hard work on the website. The two MCs looked and performed as naturals for the job.The Nativity Play was of course seasonal and blended well with the mood of the audience. The Konkani short play Confessional Secret was some entertainment the audience were not expecting nevertheless had a hearty laugh when the plot was discovered and the butler became shame-faced. There were any numbe of raffle prizes and some tables even bagged two or three prizes. The luck of the few. Dinner was something which was well worth waiting for.In a nutshell an excellent function to bring everyone into the Christmas mood.

Loy D Souza, London Tue, December-16-2014, 11:42

Thanks to all who attended and made it a brilliant function. Great venue, food, music and participants made it a great party.
