2015 FEAST OF NATIVITY

One of the most audacious, well organised, well attended Feast of Nativity of Blessed Mother Mary (Monti Fest) was celebrated on 6 September 2015 at the All Saints Catholic Church Hall. Attended by the old and new members of SKA LONDON and their guests the celebrations started with a short procession to the hall carrying the new corn and the produce of the land as offering and thanksgiving to Mother Mary for her blessings to the community and the land. There was the customary offering of choice flowers to Mother Mary by the children.

Father Patrick of the Goan Chaplaincy initiated the services with the Mass. The Mass ritual was in traditional Konkani accompanied by the distinguished choir led by Olivia Saldanha, violin by Malcolm, keyboard by Lester and Elvira.

Followed by the Mass was children’s’ activities and singing organised by Zeeta Rodrigues. It was a pleasure children singing so beautifully it seemed the roof was lifting up with their choruses.

Once again Sheila Pais took the role of the MC and made sure that instructions and information were given in time for the activities to happen.

Then followed the traditional mouth watering buffet lunch with seven vegetables cooked the real Mangalorean style and served with rice sannas prepared in ‘thondor’ (not idlis), served on traditional token banana leaves. The dessert was the popular ‘vorn’ with cashewnuts, sultanas and currents almost tasted like nectar from heaven.

The President thanked all those who took part in the celebrations not only by attending but by undertaking the various tasks to make the event such a successful one.

The disco music that followed livened up the event even further and the congragation could not hold down their feet from dancing until close down.

The following pictures give a true representation of the event.  Please scroll down and send you comments in the form at the end of this page.

Wonderful function, well organized. Its lovely to give our children a opportunity to worship Mother Mary in true Mangalore style. Thanks to all the hard work of the SKAN members who make this happen every year.

I am a keen fan of Monti Fest in Mangalore for many years. This year I happened to be in UK and got the opportunity to attend the Nativity celebrations as a guest of a member of SKA. The dedication and enthusiasm of the faithful who attended these celebrations in the Church Hall in Queensbury made me feel home from home. They had everything, the flowers (Mother Mary loves flowers), the blessing of the corn, the Mass, Konkani hymns. Notheing was a miss from the traditional flavour including the buffet lunch, home cooked vegetables, sannas followed by vorn. I thoroughly enjoyed the day at the church hall chatting to some old friends without the need to rush home as there were all conveniences attached to the hall. When I found out everything was free including the sugarcane, I asked one of the SKA Badge wearers if I could offer something. I was pointed in the direction of a DONATION BOX and was told it is only optional and that what you give in secret is for Mother Mary but will help towards the event. I was pleased I could put something in the Box. Well done SKA LONDON and look forward to next years celebrations. Thanks for a wonderful day.

It was a nice religious event and was glad it was inside the church hall to get a devotional feeling without the distraction of the fauna and the flora. I will continue to attend the celebration in the future.

Last but not least thanks to all those who attended and took part in the celebrations and made it a big success. John Mascurenus, UK Wed, September-9-2015, 6:22

One of the most prestigious and religious events I have attended for a long time. The life size banner of Mother Mary inside and outside the decorated hall naturally invited the faithful in. The hall was full to capacity and the celebrations were well organised. A big thanks to Ron Rodrigues, the President of SKA LONDON supported by his committee and well wishers made this Monti Fest a truly traditional feast to remember.
