Jacintha Mendonca worked as a nurse for a hospital in Mangaluru. An illegal agent named James offered her a job as a nurse in Qatar. Thereby, fooled her, trafficked her and then forced into slavery. She was trafficked an year ago.

As per media reports, the kaafil, who have enslaved her is demanding 5 lakh rupees for letting her go. This is the amount he paid to those illegal agents. However, with Sushma Swaraj’s intervention the hopes of her freedom have increased.

Jacintha’s three children Velita, Vinroy and Binitha, spoke to their mother a month ago. "Our last conversation was unimaginable. When she was speaking on the phone, someone came from behind and started beating her, and she dropped the phone with a loud cry. She was also coughing (blood) and mentioned that she had high fever," recalls Velita.

They live near Pernal in Karkala taluk, where Vinroy and Binitha go to college. Her father, Vincent Mendonca, died due to tuberculosis, and her sister recently recovered from it.
